ST Fibers. They are characterized by a high aerobic tolerance. This is due to the fact that they possess a high oxidative capacity and muscular tolerance. The biggest efficiency in the production of ATP grants to the fibers of ST a better oxidative capacity that those of FT. On the other hand, the high oxidative capacity induces a bigger aerobic production of ATP in these fibers, so that they can continue active for a prolonged period of time.
FT Fibers. They are characterized by a high anaerobic or glycolytic capacity possessing a smaller efficiency in the production of the ATP. Their high glycolytic capacity allows to develop a high production of force. Contrary to the ST fibers, the FT fibers are characterized by a bigger fatigability. This is due to their reduced production of ATP and the consequent accumulation of intramuscular lactate.
